Plamen Atanassov (Chemical Physics, University of Sofia, 1987) started at the Central Laboratory of Electrochemical Power Sources of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences from where he received a doctoral degree. He moved to US in 1992 as a research faculty at the University of New Mexico. In 1999 Plamen joined Superior MicroPowders (now Cabot-SMP). He returned to the UNM in 2000 as a faculty. Plamen founded the Center for Emerging Energy Technologies and was its director (2007-2011).

Since 2012 he serves as an Associate Dean for Research of the UNM School of Engineering. Plamen's research programs include development of new materials and technologies for electrochemical power sources: non-platinum electrocatalysts and nano-structured catalysts for fuel cells, advanced electrode materials for batteries, biological fuel cells and sensor systems design.
